Colourful Pallet Wood Tray using Shou Sugi Ban Technique
These trays have been made in collaboration with my husband Dave Austin. He worked on the wood and I crafted the copper handles. We think these trays are delightful, colourful and fun. Hope you do too!
Pallet Wood Tray PEAR GREEN with Copper Handles in this listing has handles made from Copper Roofing Strips. If you are familiar with my work then you will know that I like using things from the hardware shop and plumbing suppliers in my work. Some of it is upcycled from old metal as you will see in some of our other trays, but these are new strips that I bought from a chap who was getting rid of extra bits he had left over after he finished his project. The copper strips have been put through the Rolling Mill to give it a lovely texture. Other handles being made can be seen on my Instagram page.
Tray weight: 366 grams; Sizes: L =32.5cm W=14cm H=5.5cm (Wood is 1.2cm)

How were the trays made?
These trays are made from upcycled pallet wood, using wood from pallets that are marked HT. This means the wood as been heat treated and not chemically treated to prevent rot.
The first part of the process is to run them through the Thicknesser to produce a smooth surface on both sides. Then they are sanded on all faces to prepare them for the next part of the process.
The wood is then burnt using a blow torch, this process is know as Shou Sugi Ban, an ancient Japanese method of preserving wood. This raises the grain of the wood nicely.
Next we apply the colour using “Hampshire Sheen” Intrinsic colour water based wood dye. Once the colour is fully dry we apply one or more coats of “Hampshire Sheen” Food and Toy safe Danish Oil. The piece is then left it for 48 hours.
At this point the wood is sealed using “Hampshire Sheen” Cellulose Sanding Sealer. And again this is left to dry fully.
Finally the trays are waxed for the finishing. We use either “Hampshire Sheen” Food and Toy safe High Gloss finishing wax or Natural Coconut Oil which also food safe as it’s an edible oil.
